Abubakar Atiku, Nigeria’s former Vice President, announced on Friday that every tweet under his official social media channels must be approved by him before being published.

Mr Abubakar, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, made the remarks during a consultative visit to Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki at the Government House in Benin.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mr Abubakar had previously responded to the murder of Deborah Samuel, who was suspected of blasphemy.

The tweet was quickly removed, sparking widespread outrage on social media.

“Every tweet needs to have my stated agreement, but this one didn’t, so I instructed them to take it down,” Mr Abubakar said.

ATIKU’S TWEET AND RESPONSE

“I stood up to Sharia rule and was beaten and stoned, but how long did it last?” Despite this, I have not changed my mind. “I am not scared to speak up on important problems,” he stated.
