The NFF has named Jose Peseiro as the next head coach of the Super Eagles.

The NFF has named Jose Peseiro as the next head coach of the Super Eagles.

Jose Peseiro has been named head coach of the Super Eagles, months after his first contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) did not work out.

According to NFF statement issued on Sunday, the appointment is “effective immediately, subject to the signature of agreed agreements” between the football authority and the Portuguese.

“Peseiro is appointed to lead the Super Eagles for the first time on the forthcoming trip of the United States of America, during which the three-time African champions will compete in prestige friendlies against Mexico and Ecuador ‘A’ Teams,” the statement stated.

PESEIRO

“The Eagles will face the El Tri at AT & T Stadium in Dallas, Texas on Saturday, May 28th before heading to New Jersey to face Ecuador at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison on Thursday, June 2nd.”

Former international George Finidi will aid the educationist with a degree in physical education/sports sciences. Salisu Yusuf will now be the CHAN and U-23 national team head coach as well as the 2nd Assistant.

“Usman Abdallah is the third assistant, Eboboritse Uwejamomere is the match analyst, and another former Nigeria international, Ike Shorounmu is the goalkeepers’ trainer,” the NFF added.

Peseiro, 62, was a striker in his playing days and has extensive coaching experience with clubs and national teams in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America.

He has previously worked as a coach with Sporting Lisbon, FC Porto, Panathinaikos, Rapid Bucharest, Sporting Braga, Victoria Guimaraes, Al-Hilal, Al-Wahda, Al-Ahly Cairo, Sharjah FC, and Real Madrid (assistant coach during the Galacticos era).

He also served as head coach of the Saudi Arabian and Venezuelan national teams.

Prior to Sunday’s confirmation, the Glass House had selected Peseiro as the three-time African champions’ head coach following Gernot Rohr’s firing in December. Austin Eguavoen has been appointed as Nigeria’s temporary coach for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Peseiro was slated to remain an observer during the campaign before taking over and leading the team to the ill-fated World Cup play-off against Ghana.

However, the NFF reversed their decision during the AFCON, noting the team’s “good performance” in the competition, in which Nigeria was eliminated in the round of 16 against Tunisia.

“We feel that there may be a potential to work with him in the future,” the NFF said in February when it announced the rebuilding of the Super Eagles coaching staff.

Following the decision, Peseiro denied rumours that he had been confirmed as Nigeria’s head coach.

On his Instagram account, the former Porto FC manager stated that it was a “reality that I never confirmed and these (negotiations) did not materialize owing to disagreement on contractual clauses and financial matters.”

Eguavoen, however, resigned days after the Super Eagles of Nigeria failed to get one of Africa’s tickets to the 2022 World Cup.
