A raucous crowd of officials and athletes cheered as Team Nigeria hoisted the national flag at the athletes village, with Kizz Daniel’s Buga song setting the tone.
What was supposed to be a small ceremony grew in size as athletes from other countries jumped in to demonstrate their dancing skills to the Buga song.
The Commonwealth Games will take place from Thursday, July 28 to Monday, August 8. Over 5,000 athletes from 19 different sports will compete as England hosts the event for the third time in its history.
Banji Oladapo, Secretary General of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, who was delighted with the reception given to the team as Nigeria’s Green, White, Green flag fluttered in the air, stated that Nigeria would fight for all medals while demonstrating discipline and respect and abiding by the rules of the Games.
At the Games, Nigeria will be represented by 127 athletes across 17 disciplines.
Tobi Amusan, the current world record holder in the 100m, is the defending champion in the Women Hurdles. Other notable athletes expected to shine for Team Nigeria include Blessing Oborodudu, who won gold in the Women’s -68kg category at the recent Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, Odunayo Adekuoroye, who will defend her gold medal in the Women’s wrestling -57kg category, and Aminat Adeniyi, who won gold in the -62kg event.
Aruna Quadri leads the Table Tennis team, which also includes Olajide Omotayo.
