After her husband dies in police custody, a woman seeks justice.

Ebere Nwankwo, a widow, has petitioned FGN and IG of Police Alkali Usman to investigate the alleged murder of her husband, Chukwudubem Nwankwo, while in police custody in Anambra State.

She also requested that her husband’s remains be released for burial following a thorough inquiry into his death by the state police command.

Chukwudubem, a Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria (TOAN) member, was arrested on March 15 at UNIZIK Junction Park, where he works as a revenue collector, and is being held at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Awka.

“March 15, Dubem departed home as usual after taking care of certain household necessities,” Mrs. Nwankwo explained. “I waved farewell to him, and my daughter waved back.” I went about my daily tasks as usual until I received a phone call from one of his pals, who informed me that the police invaded the car park and arrested my husband along with others.

“I knew my husband hadn’t done anything dodgy, so I was convinced he’d be freed right away since there had to have been a mix-up.”

“On the third day following his arrest, he was paraded among other suspects.” My husband raised his hands while being paraded, asking why he had been detained and paraded like a criminal, but the officers shouted him down.

“They returned him to the cell. When we obtained a copy of the press release issued by the Commissioner of Police, his name was not included. Even when we involved a legal practitioner, the cops never let us see him.”

Mrs Nwankwo stated that there was no evidence of Chukwudubem’s offense or name other than his image.

“I was told that my spouse died in the jail after two months of parading Dubem.” I am left to care for our 22-month-old child on my own.

“Why did the cops murder my spouse in cold blood?” I believe someone hired the cops to kill him. Assuming he committed a crime, was it appropriate to murder him in the cell without taking him to court and having him sentenced?

“My 48-year-old husband was murdered in an extrajudicial manner.” He cannot die in vain.

According to DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the command’s spokesman, the police got information on March 15 concerning attacks by a cult group on the UNIZIK vigilante organization at Miracle Junction, Ifite, Awka.

“The police were successful in demobilizing the gang and retrieving a stockpile of firearms, including two AK-47 rifles stolen from two police officers slain on December 14, 2021.”

According to Ikenga, Chukwudubem was detained and paraded by the police for supposed cultism.

“The suspect was paraded by the Commissioner of Police, CP Echeng Echeng, on March 16, 2022, at the State Criminal Department Office in Awka, and the matter is still before the Commissioner, please,” he stated.
