2023 Election: six [6] celebrities who are running for Political office

The call for youth participation in governance ahead of the 2023 general elections resulted in a radical shift in Nigerian politics.

The shift is most noticeable in the entertainment industry, where several of these celebrities are now taking an interest in politics, with some even becoming candidates.

Six (6) Nigerian celebrities who are political candidates for different offices ahead of the 2023 elections are:

Akindele Funke

Funke Akindele, a Nollywood actress and filmmaker, has been named the Peoples Democratic Party’s deputy governorship candidate in Lagos State.
With this appointment, she became the running mate of the PDP’s Lagos State governorship candidate, Olajide Adediran, also known as Jandor.

While confirming her position, the actress revealed that she has put her acting career on hold in order to focus on her new political ambition.

Tonto Dikeh

Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh was nominated as the running mate to the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Rivers State, Tonte Ibraye for the 2023 election.

Ahead of the 2023 Rivers State gubernatorial elections, Nollywood actress, Tonto Dikeh has revealed her reasons for vying for Deputy Governor, saying that it was the right thing to do.

At a press conference in Abuja, Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh told newsmen that governance and the democratic system of Nigeria was yet to meet international standards, explaining further that she would work out ‘modalities’ with Mr. Tonte Ibraye to move the state forward.

She said, “We shall work out modalities for job creation for massive employment, inclusion of more youth and women in governance and play vital roles in the development of Rivers State where their ideas and strength can be properly utilized.

“As a patriotic Nigerian, an advocate of good governance and a humanitarian who have positively touched the lives of millions of less privileged through my foundation, The Tonto Dikeh Foundation, and my experience on governance, leadership, and administration from Committee of Youth on Mobilization Sensitisation (CYMS), I will play a crucial role in moving our dear state forward.

“Having interacted constantly with Mr. Tonte Ibraye, whom i have adjudged as a grounded person in international development ventures, a gentleman with an enduring passion in redefining our collective future in Rivers State, where there will be mutual ethnic respect and collective development in all sectors of our economy, I make bold to say that accepting this nomination is not only a good idea but, the right thing to do.”

Banky W’

Bankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, is an actor and singer who won the PDP primary ticket for the Eti-Osa constituency in the Federal House of Representatives ahead of the 2023 general election.

The singer had previously been declared the winner of the first primary election, but the result slip showed his contender, Sam Aiboni, as the winner.

Following the controversy, another primary was held two weeks later, and Banky W won again, getting 24 votes out of 29 cast by delegates.

Elliot, Desmond

Desmond Elliot, who currently represents Surulere Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, was elected to a third term on the All Progressives Congress ticket.

Elliot received 30 votes as the sole candidate for the ticket in the May 2022 primary.

On April 11, 2015, Elliot ran for and won the Surulere Constituency 1 seat in the general election. His nomination for a second and third term by the APC was unopposed.

Nwoko, Ned

Ned Nwoko, a popular businessman and politician, has won the Peoples Democratic Party senatorial ticket for Delta North ahead of the 2023 general elections.

To commemorate his victory, the politician lavished N10 million on his staff, awarding N100,000 to each of his staff members.
Nwoko is married to Regina Daniels, a well-known Nigerian actress, and the couple has two sons.

Odi Okojie

Husband of actress Mercy Johnson, Odi Okojie, won the All Progressives Congress ticket for a House of Representatives seat for Edo State.

With his win, Okojie emerged as the candidate for the Esan North East/ South East federal constituency ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Okojie married Mercy Johnson in 2011 and they have four children together.
